Mass of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Candelaria)

Msgr. Melencio De Vera, 84 year old retired priest of the Archdiocese of Manila who now resides in Marilao, Bulacan and celebrated last July 2007 his 60th year in the priesthood, celebrated a Low Mass according to the Extraordinary Roman Rite at the Private Chapel of the Marian Library and Information Center at R. Hidalgo across gothic San Sebastian Basilica, Quiapo, Manila in commemoration of Candlemass. In his sermon he stated that what preoccupies people today is that they are preocuppied with a lot of things that we have forgotten to pray without ceasing and that our prayers are mostly petitions rather than glorifying and praising God, thus our prayers are sledom answered. He also stated that prayers are only a part of Christian life and should be balanced with serving our fellowmen by at least praying for them if not guiding them to a good Catholic life. Failure to do so would lead us to spiritual perdition. After the 1pm Mass Msgr. blessed candles brought by the faithful and again will celebrate Mass the following day in honor of St. Blase.
